Salary Cap

Sports and the money it generates for salary caps

Once again, the preseason is upon us.  I was wondering how much to read into the games the NFL puts on the first month.  The Eagles schedule might as well include the Pottsville Maroons because the whole preseason is a farce.  About the only good thing you get to see is how many draft picks get cut.  Think about it, the team spends hundred of thousands of dollars in research on the players only to cut them 4 months later.  Good system of development.  I would continue bitchin about this, but I have a dog fighting tournament to get to…sure hope Vick is there.

The Philadelphia Phillies are pursuing Octavio Dotel from the Kansas City Royals.  Salary cap has learned that a trade is close for the Phillies to pick up some much needed bullpen help.  The other team in the running is the Boston Red Sox.  Let’s see if the Red Sox outbid the Phillies for Dotel.  My money is saying the Red Sox, but my heart is hoping for the Phillies.  Mets fans, go to hell and die.

I heard this while on vacation.  Salary cap laughed and thought everyone might want to hear this…

A second grade teacher gave an assignment to her class to write a story with a moral for homework. The assignment was due the next day.

So, little Billy thought and thought at home and came up with a great story.

The next day, the teacher asked Jill what story she wrote. Jill said she had some eggs under a heat lamp and thought she would get 12 chicks, but instead only 8 hatched. The teacher asked about the moral and Jill said “Don’t count your chickens before they hatch.”

Very good said the teacher.

Then, the teacher saw little Susie’s hand up and asked her what story did she have. Susie said her Daddy placed all the eggs in a basket on the way to market. The cart tipped over and the eggs all broke on the road. The teacher asked Susie what was the moral of the story and Susie replied “Don’t place all your eggs in one basket.”

Good job said the teacher.

Finally the teacher asked Billy who was out of his chair with excitement about his story.

Billy said my Uncle Buck is an army pilot. He got shot down in Iraq. Before he bailed he only had a m-16 knife and a bottle of Jack Daniels. So, Uncle Buck drank the bottle of Jack, grabbed the gun and knife and parachuted out. On the way down, 100 Iraq insurgents were waiting for him. Uncle Buck took out his weapon and started shooting. By the time Uncle Buck hit the ground, he had killed 70…now he was out of bullets.

He picked up the knife and killed 20 more before the blade snapped. The last ten he killed by snapping their necks.

The teacher looked horrified and shocked while Billy was beaming with pride. The teacher asks Billy what was the moral of the story.

Billy looked at her and said “You don’t fuck with Uncle Buck when he is drunk!”

Salary cap wants to start the campaign of saying Chase Utley should be the next NL MVP.  I am willing to hear any arguments contrary to this belief, but Chase has to be the leader for this honor.

Salary cap has been paying attention to the u-20 world cup soccer.  One, it is a good distraction from the phillies this time of year.  Two, the mlb All-star week is boring.  And third, the team is really good this year.  Josmer Altidore, Freddy Adu and Danny Szetela have three goals a piece.  Freddy Adu is starting to display some of the reasons he was the youngest professional sports player in America 4 years ago.  At 18, he is amazing.  His goal against Poland was just sick.  And that assist going through two defenders was Senior world cup stuff.  Sometimes, it just takes one good tournament to make a player start believing in hinself and rise to the next level.  Freddy Adu is about to take that leap.  Go USA!

Not much to say about this awful affair.  I was out running trying to get into better shape the correct way.(minus the clear and the cream) I was unfortunate enough to come back around 8:30 to see that about half of the contestants had 3 or 4 homeruns.  It really didn’t get any better than this.  San Fransisco is not a hitters ballpark, so most of the all-stars(Ryan Howard defended and is not an all-star this year) had to suffer through hitting the warning track.  I now know why Barry Bonds and Ken Griffey declined participation.  Left-handers were eliminated in the first round.  Once again, good job Bud Selig for providing boring entertainment during the all-star festivities.  You are the worst MLB Commissioner of all-time.  Salary cap hopes Arena football is on tonight so I can actually watch something untainted like the MLB allstar game.

Let’s talk about the Philadelphia Phillies and this “historical” event that people in the media(and my Mets coworker) keep bringing up.  Salary cap is sick and tired of hearing about 10,000 losses as a franchise.  Yes, eventually, if your team is around long enough, they too will have 10,000 losses.  I for one, am happy and proud that my team has been around long enough that no one remembers the first loss.  It means that my team has a history that dates back before baseball became tainted by steroids, scandals(aka Alex rodriguez) and second tier teams in the same city(aka the New York Mets).

The game last night had the Phillies stuck on 9,999 loses.  But, the Phillies showed that teamwork and the blue collar approach is the right way to live, let alone the right way to play the game.  With a hurricane force wind storm, the Phillies bailed out the Colorado Rockies ground crew by helping secure the tarp on the field.  Shane Victorino used his entire 180 lbs to help hold it down.  Later, when the game resumed, Shane was rewarded by the baseball gods by hitting his 11th homerun and leading the Philadelphia Phillies to a win.  Good karma is what one gets when you do the noble thing.  I am proud of this team.  After starting 4-11, the phillies are now 44-44 at the all-star game.  No matter how the rest of the season turns out, this is one of salary caps favorite teams of all time.  Go Phillies!

WOW!  Salary cap has been shocked by the Philadelphia Flyers retooling for the upcoming season.  First came the trade for Scott Hartnell and Kimmo Timonen for the 23rd overall pick.  This move was brilliant.  The Flyers gave up a sure non-factor for a defenseman and a upcoming star in Scott.

Then, The Flyers signed Daniel Briere.  I can tell this is not my father’s NHL with this signing.  The small, fast, creative skater is now able to succeed in this new rule NHL.  This signing has a significant trickle down effect.  Salary cap notices that now Jeff Carter is the number two center with Mike Richards number three.  R.J. Umberger is the fourth line centerman.  This allows for all four centermen to be playing at the correct spot in the lineup.  Simon Gagne with Briere and Carter with Mik Knuble gives the Flyers two great scoring lines now.

However, the Flyers werent done.  In a trade, the Flyers acquired Jason Smith and Joffrey Lupul.  A solid defenseman with another rising star winger from Edmonton Oilers.  The leadership of Smith is another boost in the arm.  So, scoring at home, the Flyers now have three players who were captains of their NHL teams last year.  Leadership and talent with Martin Biron has salary cap thinking that last year is the one and only year that the Flyers will miss the playoffs.
